Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has had an unbelievable season so far in Europe and the Bundesliga at Signal Iduna Park, and has scored more goals than syllables in his name for Borussia Dortmund this season, and that’s no mean feat.
23 goals in 21 games in all competitions and leading the Bundesliga scoring charts with 15, ahead of even the free-scoring Robert Lewandowski, Aubameyang has more than justified his 2013 £9.1 million price tag.
Despite recently signing a contract extension, the Dortmund striker has been linked with moves all over the place and, of course, the Premier League was involved in the rumours. Arsenal reportedly expressed their interest and were reportedly given a £42 million price tag.
Unfortunately I don’t see this happening. Borussia Dortmund are having a brilliant season and Thomas Tuchel has led them to second place in the Bundesliga behind only the inexorable Bayern Munich.
Given this it is more than possible that Aubameyang won’t leave Signal Iduna Park at all. In fact there are rumours that he has made a pact with fellow Dortmund star Marco Reus to not leave unless the other leaves too.
If he is to leave then La Liga looks to be the place that Aubameyang has his heart set on, having told the BBC World Service ‘my dream is to play in Spain.’ Real Madrid isn’t an unrealistic prospect, especially with all the Benzema controversy and the under-performing Galacticos.
However, I think a beneficial move would be a transfer to Atletico Madrid. Los Rojiblancos have struggled for goals recently and Aubameyang’s pace and style of play would suit Atletico’s counter-attacking method perfectly.
Antoine Greizmann has had so much success at Atletico Madrid as he has the pace and finishing ability to benefit from this system, just as Aubameyang does.
