Can Radamel Falcao revive his career at Chelsea?

The summer transfer window is a catalyst for conversations between football fans across the world. With this year’s window barely open, Falcao’s almost certain move to Chelsea is causing a massive division between Blues fans due to numerous reasons.

The Colombian looks set to join Chelsea on a season-long loan deal with Jose Mourinho having the option to purchase Falcao for €15million when the loan deal has come to an end.

The striker scored 4 goals in 24 Premier League appearances at Manchester United last season, fairly pathetic for someone of Falcao’s ilk. Throughout his time globetrotting in Porto, Atletico Madrid and Monaco the striker has been prolific and looked one of the world’s best, so where did it all go wrong?

On January 23rd 2014 it was announced Falcao had suffered a knee injury that would mean he misses the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Since then he just hasn’t looked like the same player; a striker regarded as one of the best in the world. However, it’s widely believed that Falcao rushed himself back such was his desire to play in the World Cup that he was not ready and his ACL injury has not fully recovered.

Chelsea offer the finest medical team in the country, that, along with a full pre-season under his belt and no pressure to get fit, Falcao could find himself feeling sharp and 100% ready to go come the start of the season.

One reason he looked so poor in the red of Manchester United is because they didn’t suit his style of play. The crosses from deep were more suited to Marouane Fellaini who could get the flick on from the edge of the box or chest the ball down for someone else. That approach just doesn’t suit Falcao at all. It just isn’t his game. He lives for crosses in front of him where he can attack the ball. With the likes of Eden Hazard, Willian and Colombian teammate Juan Cuadrado on Chelsea’s wings, their crosses could see Falcao find the back of the net where their team better resemble that Atletico side he played in.

Although his pace seems to have been lost due to his injury, his intelligent movement still remains. This, combined with the magical vision of Cesc Fabregas, may also reinvigorate El Tigre as he’ll certainly get the service he requires.

Although this move may look confusing on paper you could argue Falcao still has something to prove to both the English media and Louis van Gaal.

There will be no pressure on the striker either, he is not being bought in as the first choice forward and many could argue the form of Loic Remy could push Falcao to third choice. Diego Costa is ultimately Mourinho’s first choice striker and as we’ve seen it will be very hard to displace the Spaniard from the starting XI, so Falcao can go about his business from the bench, hoping to impress and rediscover the form world football knows he’s capable of.

If you compare the three strikers Chelsea had available for selection last campaign to the possible three for the forthcoming season there is certainly an improvement. Whilst Didier Drogba is a legend at Chelsea and is adored by each and every Chelsea fan it was painful to watch him last season. Half the player he once was, he did a decent enough job though.

Jose Mourinho said in a recent interview: “It upsets me that people think Falcao is the Falcao we saw in England.” If anyone can help Falcao discover his form of the past, it’s The Special One.
